It’s been five years since the first iPhone was released and yesterday, I finally joined the movement and got a smartphone. (“Welcome to 2012,” my friends say. :)

First order of business is tricking out my phone with cool apps, and I’ve been excited to discover that there’s a whole slew of useful apps for designers out there. Here I give you a list of my top five favorites that stood out from the rest:

Adobe Photoshop Express (Free)

Edit and share photos on the go by using your touchscreen to rotate, crop, adjust and more. Comes with a free Photoshop.com account that stores all of your photos and videos and makes it easy to share with family and friends. Download

Sketchbook Mobile ($1.99)

Professional-grade painting and drawing application that gives you a full set of sketching tools right from your touchscreen. Use your finger or a stylus to sketch on a blank canvas or select a photo to draw on top of. Download

Color Pal (Free)

Quickly browse and search Colour Lovers’ database of colors and palettes with this popular unofficial app. The ability to email yourself the color value in HEX, RGB and CMYK makes it easy to reference wherever you need it. Download

Color Detector (Free)

Take a picture and this app will detect the color in the center. Get the HEX, RGB and HSV color values and share it by email, Facebook or Twitter. Download

Fontest

A typography tool for developers and designers that shows you how your favorite fonts appear on Android devices. Download
